HISTORY
Noorduyn Norseman CF-JIN (very early construction number 55) is a historic bush plane that wore the yellow wartime colours of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) as serial number 2482.
Built in May 1941: Construction number 55 is officially completed at the factory and delivered to the RCAF as a Mk IV variant with military serial 2482.
Post-War & Later Life: Converted to a Mk V model in 1957 and allocated civilian registration CF-JIN.
It was operated for many years by Austin Airways and in later years, Chimo Air Service out of Red Lake, Ontario. Preserved and restored over the decades, the aircraft famously appeared at events like the Red Lake Norseman Festival in Ontario in July 1995 sporting its vibrant all-yellow RCAF training/wartime livery.
The aircraft has recently flown again following a seven-year-long intensive rebuild and now, without floats, and wears its original RCAF markings.
COMMERCIAL AND CIVILIAN USES
Bush Flying: Flew supplies, equipment, and tourists to remote wilderness areas in northern Canada and Alaska.
Cargo and Freight: Earned nicknames like “the one-ton flying truck” for its heavy-lifting capacity.
Specialized Operations: Used for forest fire fighting, air ambulance services, and supporting mining or fishing outposts.
MILITARY USES (WORLD WAR II)
Utility Transport: Operated by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and the U.S. Army Air Forces (designated as the UC-64) to haul personnel and freight.
Training: Served as a wireless, radio, and navigational trainer for aircrews.
Medical Evacuation & Rescue: Flew rescue and medevac missions across harsh terrains from Alaska to the Pacific.
