History
Production of the Saab Safir, a primary trainer aircraft, commenced in 1944 and concluded in 1966, resulting in a total of 323 aircraft. The model range comprised five variants: the three-seat 91A, 91B, and 91B-2, as well as the four-seat 91C. A distinct model, the 91D, differed from its predecessors by incorporating a lighter Lycoming O-360 engine generating 180 hp, replacing the O-435 engine used in other variants.
The Saab Safir served a dual purpose as both a trainer aircraft and an invaluable aerodynamic testbed. In a pioneering move, SAAB equipped the initial Safir prototype with a swept wing configuration to conduct low-speed testing. This experimental setup proved instrumental in refining the aerodynamic characteristics of subsequent Saab jet fighters, significantly advancing the company’s aircraft design capabilities.
