The De Havilland Canada DHC-1 Chipmunk was  an aerobatic 2 seat primary trainer, that replaced the Tiger Moth in RAF service. It was predominantly of metal construction with fabric covered aft of the spars. It has a sliding perspex canopy providing excellent vision.

History

The first prototype was flown on the 22nd of May 1946. Some 1,000 aircraft were built in the UK, with a further 217 built in Canada and 66 built in Portugal. It was powered by the Gypsy Major 8, 4 cylinder engine delivering 145 HP. It had a maximum speed of 138 MPH ; Cruise speed of 119 MPH
